It is completely normal and natural to feel sadness or have negative thoughts from time to time, especially if there has been a disruption or negativity in your life. How do I know if I have depression?
To know if you have depression you must be diagnosed by a doctor, but there are some common signs and symptoms to be aware of. The signs and symptoms of depression are not limited to but include:
- Persistent negative emotions; sadness, guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness.
- Feelings of emptiness
- Feeling numb
- Feeling foggy; you may feel unable to speak or think clearly
- Trouble making, even small, decisions
- Lack of libido
- Disrupted sleep patterns

- Inability to find pleasure in life or things you previously enjoyed
- Feeling disconnected from reality
- Lack of self-esteem or self-confidence
- Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol or taking drugs to ‘cope’

Treatment Options at Nova Recovery
Nova Recovery is register with Health Improvement Scotland (NHS Registered Body) meaning we are led by a Psychiatrist, a Nurse Manager (RMN) a Specialist Nurse Practitioner (RMN, Therapist), Nursing staff (Mental Health Nurse Therapists) and Support Therapists, throughout all our treatment options.
All our high-quality treatment options have been specially designed by our expert staff to be the most beneficial for our clients to achieve long-term management or recovery.
We offer one on one therapy sessions where you will discuss your thoughts and feelings with a trained member of staff. During these sessions you will also undergo a psychiatric assessment and if antidepressant medications are required, the correct type of antidepressant can be prescribed.
Nova Recovery are also passionate advocates for Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, also known as DBT. DBT is a third wave mindfulness treatment that is widely recognised to help those suffering from a variety of psychological disorders or addictions. Our team has found it to work very well with other talking therapies and 12 step programmes.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) improves your motivation, decreases negative or destructive behaviours. We have seen lots of evidence that DBT is beneficial with helping people recover from depression and addictions, especially when used alongside 12-step models of recovery.
We also have an extensive range of addiction treatments if you require help with any unhealthy coping mechanisms you may have developed through your struggles with depression.
Does Nova Recovery Offer Aftercare?
As a Nova Recovery client, you will have 24/7 access to mental health professionals and given a DBT workbook to continue your recovery once you’ve left our facilities.
Additionally, we can provide an individually tailored aftercare plan to help maintain your recovery. This aftercare plan also includes access to a 24/7 helpline should you need more assistance maintaining long-term recovery.
What Are the Facilities Like at Nova Recovery?
Nova Recovery is located on the beautiful west coast of Scotland, just a short walk from country walks and beaches overlooking the Isle of Arran. We have found connecting with nature to be very beneficial for mental health recovery, so we recommend bringing outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes. There are also opportunities for group activities, visiting the local swimming pool for example.
All bedlinen and towels are washed and dried by a laundry service and there is an on-site laundry for all personal washing. The majority of our bedrooms have disabled access via a lift. You will be asked about any disability needs before you arrive and will be allocated an appropriate room.
All food is locally sourced and freshly prepared. With all diets and religious dietary needs accounted for, again all these needs will be discussed and accounted for before you arrive.
There is also a smoking shelter at rear of building. And transport from airports and train stations can be provided.
